Prelim, Diary and My Thriller

OUR PRELIM VIDEO

Our prelim we filmed was for us to practise the cameras and learn how to use both the cameras and the editing suite. We can tell by watching this video that we didn't have much experience when filming this clip. Mostly because the videos editing isn't the best, since the continuity doesn't flow well. We used a tripod for this activity, i think next time we would plan where the camera would be a bit better. In conclusion to this, we could improve by filming it again, also taking more and longer shots which would be easier to cut together.

MY DIARY

Tuesday 4th January
This was our first day in the editing suite with our tape. The first thing we did was watch our thriller to see what footage we had and to see how it turned out. We thought when we first looked over our tape that we had enough shots for the 2 minute piece we had to produce.

Wednesday 5th January
Following on from the day before, we started to capture all the shots, the best out of about 3 or 4 takes. When we captured these we had to leave space either side of the shot so we had all of shot included there, and cut the bits out which we needed. Once we had captured all these shots, which took about 30 minutes or so, we then saved this to the shared user, so we could access this from all areas of the college.

Thursday 6th January
When we logged on today we then had all the footage which we had captured the day before, so this meant we could start edited them together. The problem we faced while doing this was choosing the shots which flowed together the best, and which shots we wanted to use for match-on-action.

Friday 7th January
We carried on today with the editing of the shots, and continuing to make them flow using match-on-action.

Tuesday 11th January
In this lesson we discussed with Dawn which shots were OK to use and which shots weren't good enough for the final 2 minutes. Dawn then told us once we'd re-filmed our film she'd watch it again and let us know if it was OK.

Wednesday 12th January
We took on Dawns advise in this lesson and we tried our best to make our shots work together. They all flowed well it was just the way we had filmed it which didn't work properly.

Thursday 13th January
Today we showed Dawn our best efforts with what filming we had and used. While watching it, it became aware that we may have to film again.

Friday 14th January
We decided we needed to re film our Thriller, simply because we didn't have enough shots to get us up to 2 minutes. We then hit the problem of the people we used to be able to fit in with us, to film again. We got in touch with them and found out we weren't free around the same times, so we figured that we needed different people to be in our film. This meant we needed to re film everything we already had, also had to change the location sheets since we filmed at a different place.

Tuesday 18th January
We edited on the 16th, Sunday. We were all free and so were our actors. We had to go through all of the procedures like we did before, so the capturing, and the cutting of the shots to make the 2 minutes flow. Since we'd done this before and knew what we were doing we moved through this quite quickly. We got all of the shots done, and realised it wasn't long enough so we did some more filming that night to finalise the filming.

Wednesday 19th January
We watched the new filming and captured this all to put into the Thriller. We moved the shots around quite a lot and make the continuity work better than before, considering the light of the shots.

Thursday 20th January
Today we added the titles to the shots, and we also did the log sheets and the edit decision lists of the new film, Me and Emma stayed behind and finished off some of edit decision lists, and i took them home and scanned them as, as i thought this would of been easier than doing this in college, in case the scanner wasn't free.

Friday 21st January
This was our last lesson editing, which meant we had to make sure everything was finished off ready for our piece of filming. This meant we needed to make sure all of the shots linked together, making the continuity work. We also needed to delete all back ground sound from the filming, since the cameras picked up sound too, we then put our own music over the top of the sequence which made the piece more intense. By the end of this lesson we had done everything that needed to be done.

Tuesday 25th January
We went back and looked at our film again, just to make sure everything was OK with the Thriller. We realised we hadn't put the full credits on yet, which meant this needed doing.

Evaluation

In What ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

§Our thriller compare to other thrillers because when watching the young actor who we have used goes missing and we show this at the beginning but we don’t show him for a while so this makes the audience wonder where he’s gone. We did this to put the audience on edge, and I believe it does this.
§We see in the film a figure nearer to the end, this also makes the audience ask questions as to who this is, since we can’t see the face of this person very clearly.
§When planning our thriller we wanted to set it in a house, this meant the lighting continuity isn’t as much of a problem, we also wanted a young child in our thriller because they are more venerable.
§I think the opening to our thriller really works, with the match on action. This works well because of the different shots took from different angles. An example of this would be when the mother is walking up the stairs, and we have used different shots to capture it at different points.
§We put that certain music on because we thought it fit in with our film and it built suspense too.
§In the thriller, we have used a figure which we see walking down the street, you cant tell if this figure is a male or female, although we went with the idea of the figure being a man, this is mainly because men are seen as being the stronger sex.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
I think our film would target the teenage audience this would be because the teenage market like the films to freak them out and make them scared
Another reason is, I don’t think this film would be appropriate for children because the character which is in danger in our film is a child, so the children watching could get too scared.
Another reason I think children would not like this is because its set in a house environment so they might not feel safe at home if they watch this.
When we researched other films there wasn’t any young boys being kidnapped, so we decided to use this so it was different.
Also we used the young boys real mother in the filming, to make it more comfortable for the young boy.
I believe if our film was in the cinema, it would be in more mainstream cinema because it follows the same theme as other films which are in the mainstream cinema because it would appeal to a large audience not just a small audience.
It holds some of the same aspects of professional films, this would be another reason for it being appropriate for the mainstream cinema.
The aspects which follows through the professional films would be things like the suspense and also some of the camera angles and the match-on-action.
Our film represents children being venerable, they aren't as aware of danger compared to adults
Main character being a woman because they are also venerable.
Male villain because they are stereotypically the stronger sex, and are known to have more control.
Our sequence is focusing more on the build up and suspense, which is why our characters don’t get injured or killed in this particular part of the film. Instead it builds suspense and makes you ask questions.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
If our film were to be instituted I would want Film 4 to be our institute. Mainly because they advertise well and also make the films they believe are good enough to be made big, for example Jaws, which is instituted by Film 4.

If we were to advertise our film our self, i don’t think we would be able to fund it in order to make it big and popular. So the best option would be to advertise it through Film 4. The reason being, people are used to watching films made by Film 4, so they will listen to the advert more if it's advertised by them. I would prefer our film to be on the Film 4 channel on T.V this is mainly because people can watch this when at home rather than going to the cinema to watch this. Also being this is a 15 certificate we wouldn’t have much control with the film being at home, except the password in order to use Sky Films. Although if adults are with the under 15's then it’s their choose to let the children watch the film.

Who would be your audience for your media product?

When planning and making our film we wanted our target market to be the teenage audience.
We think our film will appeal to both male and females.
We used a young boy and a woman in the opening of our thriller, which will continue to be the main characters through-out our film.
I wouldn’t recommend our film to the young audience, because the victim is a young boy and could relate this to them.
Another reason would be the young children wouldn’t want to watch this because it’s a family environment and this could cause them to feel unsafe in their own home.
Pictures of our Target Audience:

How did you attract/address your audience?
When targeting our market we carried out a questionnaire, which we handed out around the college, since this was our target market. We had these filled in and we then collated the results and put these on our blogs in the form of charts.
The way in which we made it target the teenage audience would be, we tried to put the audience on edge, but not too much that we made them feel uncomfortable.
At the end of our filming, we did another questionnaire, this was to get feedback on our Thriller. (You can see this questionnaire and the first one on another part of our blog) This helps us because the next time we film, we can use this feedback to make the product more appropriate for the target audience.

What have you learnt about the technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression to the full product?

VOICE RECORDING
•I definitely believe we have improved from the first task we did, which was ‘walking through the door task’ I think doing that first task It taught us about the cameras so we were ready to do this Thriller.
•In the walking through the door task we learnt the basics on the cameras where as in this task we learnt more, and have educated ourselves with the camera.
•I believe the shots we used where good enough, I just don’t think they gave the overall message across very well.
•Another problem we faced was the length of our Thriller, we had to re-film several times because the film was too short, so we needed to film more shots, and make it longer.
•This is so we could portrayy the family life image, and something coming to disrupt this.

Section 11 - Audience feedback

5)       On a scale of 1-5 how much suspense was created?

1       2       3       4       5
6)      Would you want to watch the rest of the film after watching the opening scene?
Yes                 No

7)      Which famous thriller do you think is most similar to ours?

8)      Do you think that any of the characters on show are the hero or villain?

Yes   (which character)                         No
9)      Was there a wide range of camera angles used?
Yes                No

10)   Was the thriller entertaining?
Yes         No

11)   Did the thriller match any of the codes & conventions?
Yes (which codes & conventions)                       No

12)   Did you relate to the characters?
Yes          No

13)   Was the framing of the shots good?
Yes          No

14)   On a scale of 1 to 5 how much did you feel the fits into the thriller genre?
1             2             3             4           5

15)   How could the thriller be improved?

We can see from this data that the audience could understand the storyline, this may be because of the title which is at the end of our opening. Also the young boy went off to hide, which we could see and also we could see she was looking round the house for him too.

The music builds suspense through our thriller, the reason being the music starts off quite low and slow. The sound then began to grow louder and faster through out the film which gives the effect that the danger is getting closer.

I believe the graphics where appropriate to the thriller becuase they gave a retorical question at the end of the opening which was red and gave the impression of blood or danger, also the text was appropriate.

I believe the theme was good becuase the kidnapping is well known and we gave it a twist in the opening, this is becuase we saw there was going to be danger and we gave the audience a good insight as to what will happen through the film.

Most of the votes where of 4 and 5 which means the audience believed the opening built suspense. I think the main reason for this would be the music we used for the background of our thriller, and how the music built up through out the opening.

Most people we interviewed said they wouldnt want to watch the rest of the film after watching this opening. This may be becuase we gave too much away in the opening.

I belive the audience to our Thriller said no because they haddn't watched enough of the film to know who the main villain is and who the hero may be.

The audience may of said this becuase we used the same angles a few times, but we flicked from each angle to the others.

The opening was meant to build suspense for the main film, which i believe it did.

Our thriller followed codes and conventions such as, sound, which built suspense when played at the back of the action taking place.

We can tell by this data that they could relate to the charaters by the charater being a child and the target audience being teenagers. They can relate being its transform city and the child is a normal person so they can understand the danger they are in.

We give all the detail needed in the shots we used, i think this is the reason why the framing was good.

Most of the audience believed it fit into the Thriller genre.

Codes and Conventions

The camera angles we used in our thriller was a range of shots, we used low angle shots where we could see the feet of the person who was walking/running. We used low angle also when the woman was looking in the cupboard for the young boy while playing hide and seek. We also used high angle shots, for example when the woman is walking up the stairs in her house looking for the young boy again. Another shot we used was medium shot, which we used most of the way through our thriller.

Some other shots which we used are:
Long shot
Mediun shot
Close up shot
Exstream close up shot
Eye level shot

We used these shots mainly becuase we know films are more successful when there is a range of shots. It makes the film more interesting and easier to follow and makes our film build suspense.

The thrillers that we watched at the start of the topic, use most of these shots and more, we tryed to include most of the shots they use, mainly because they are succsessful with the making of their films and they worked when they edited the shots together.
